LONG ISLAND BRIEFS Cop Asks County Help The Suffolk legislature's presiding officer said yesterday that veteran police officer Theodore Adamchak wants the county to help pay for his legal fight against the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, which expelled him after he told a legislative committee about alleged police improprieties. Adamchak, a 19-year veteran of the force, told the Suffolk legislature's Public Safety Committee last year that he had seen two police officers steal while on burglary calls in 1979 and that he had observed police officers drinking on duty at the Terryville Firehouse. The PBA expelled him on Jan. 22. PBA President Michael Mahoney said at the time that Adamchak had violated PBA bylaws.

Yesterday, Sondra Bachety, presiding officer of the legislature, said Adamchak had told her that he thought the legislators had agreed to pay for his legal fees because he was protected by the county's whistleblower law. But Bachety said no money has been set aside for Adamchak. Legis. Gregory Blass (R-Jamesport), who preceded Bachety as presiding officer, said no promises had been made to Adamchak. "The whistleblower law doesn't apply to actions of unions only to actions of department heads," Blass said.

He said he will soon introduce legislation expanding the whistleblower law. Adamchak would not comment. A truck at the loading dock pulled away and a steel ramp that had been level with the dock dropped, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 10:45 a.m. Five Killed in Car Crashes By Tom Demoretcky Five people were killed in separate auto accidents on Long Island yesterday, including a teenager struck by a hit-and-run driver in Lake Grove and a woman riding with three fellow employees on their way to a wake in Lindenhurst.
