of L.L corner of St. 11, at L.I, Fu- St. Fri- of on Culver. 11. of 5 OBITUARIES Jeanne Covell, a Witness By Tony Schaeffer Mrs.

Jeanne Covell, a former Hempstead resident whose religious convictions in connection with an illness five years ago led to a State Supreme Court case, died July 16. Her death was not announced until yesterday pending the return of her brother, Albert Smith of Hempstead, from an Alaska vacation. Mrs. Covell, 62, died in a Hamilton, N.Y. hospital after a relapse following surgery and what appeared to be an improvement in her health, her husband, Roswell said.

The couple spent recent years together in the upstate community of Lake Moraine after a reconciliation following Mrs. Covell's 1966 illness. In April, 1966, Mrs. Covell, then 57, was in serious condition at Meadowbrook Hospital due to hemorrhaging because of a bleeding ulcer. Doctors said she was in dire need of blood transfusions and might very well die without them.

But Mrs. Covell was a Jehovah's Witness, and her faith prohibits transfusions, so she refused. Entreaties by her son, Wilbur, 28 and a a Witness, and by her doctors were fruitless. A deputy Nassau County attorney sought a State Supreme Court order permitting the transfusions, but after visiting the hospital and being told by a hospital psychiatrist that Mrs. Covell was rational, as well as that the hemorrhaging had temporarily stopped, Justice William R.

Brennan Jr. ruled that the woman was exercising her constitutional right to freedom of religion by her stand. He denied the county's motion. However, Covell then visited his. estranged wife from his upstate home and persuaded her to consent to the transfusion procedure.

Covell also was a Witness but declared that he did not believe in the transfusion ban. Six pints of blood were given to Mrs. Covell and the ulcer was removed by surgery. Covell said yesterday that he and his wife had been reunited since the fall of 1966 and added, "I think perhaps that 1966 was what got us back together." Mrs. Covell had undergone surgery for a bowel obstruction before her death.

She was buried in Oldsville, N.Y. "She was very conscientious about our religion," Covell had said after persuading her to change her DEATH NOTICES ARMSTRONG- -William L. of Tom's River, N.J. on August 9, 1971. loved husband of Kathleen (nee Potter).

Monaco mind five years ago, "but I just told her that I didn't want her to die and that perhaps Jehovah would forgive her."
